Terms and Conditions of "Cruising in Company"
Portishead Cruising Club is an amateur organisation and as such any member should consider this when participating in a "cruise in company" organised by or on behalf of the club. In essence it is not reasonable to suppose that the organiser of the cruise in company is qualified or trained in managing such events and that they have undertaken a risk assessment for the event.
General
The person best able to evaluate the capabilities of the crew and the abilities of the boat, and the element of challenge that he* and his* crew are able and desire to accept, is the skipper of each vessel.
As such the fundamental principle in all sailing events (with the limited exception of novices under training and children where they are in charge of a boat) that it is the responsibility of the skipper of each craft to decide whether to start or continue an event, in the light of his or her competence, the ability of the crew, and the suitability of the craft for the conditions likely to be encountered.
Organisation
The club considers a 'Cruise in Company' to be defined as a cruise of two or more boats which during their passage from one location to another do so whilst being in communication with each other, by prior arrangement.
The event becomes a club event ( ie. covered by the club's risk assessment and is the responsibility of the club) if the event is organised by the flag officers, or by an individual or subcommittee authorised by the committee.
