PCC Health and Safety Around the Club

The Slipway

The club slipway has been identified as one of the most likely causes of injury to the members of the club and the public. The mud desposited on the slipway each tide causes it be very slippery. The stone construction is very hard.

The most significant types of injury which can occur are broken bones, or head injuries.

To reduce the likelyhood of injury it is recommended that

Flat soled shoes or boots (especially sailing wellingtons) are readily lubricated by the mud and are possibly the main preventable cause of slipping.

Dairy wellingtons or boots with knobbly soles give better grip, however even so care must be taken.

Hard (dried) mud overlaid by a fresh deposit of wet mud provides a more slippery surface than either type of mud on its own.

Walk sideways down the slipway, if you do slip you are less likely to hit your head.
